Patriots Pro Bowler holding out because he won't apologize to owner

By Chris Chase

In today's edition of "when keeping it real goes wrong," New England Patriots tackle Logan Mankins(notes) reportedly left a $57 million contract on the table because he refused to issue a public apology for making disparaging statements about team owner Bob Kraft.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Mankins and his agent were set to sign a deal with the Patriots that would have kept the Pro Bowl guard in New England for the next seven years. But before finalizing the deal, the club asked Mankins to call owner Bob Kraft and apologize for questioning his ethics this past spring when the player publicly called out Kraft for not living up to his word about negotiating a contract extension last season.

Mankins reportedly called Kraft, the two had a talk and an apology was accepted. But 90 minutes before the contract was to be signed, the Pats evidently asked Mankins to make a public apology. He balked and became even more offended than before. Mankins remained unsigned and didn't play in the Patriots' season-opening win over the Cincinnati Bengals.

In June, here's what Mankins had to say about Kraft and the Patriots:

"I was asked to play ‘09 out, and that they would address the contract during the uncapped year. I'm a team player, I took them at their word, and I felt I played out an undervalued contract.

"That's the big thing. [...] Right now, this is about principle with me and keeping your word and how you treat people. This is what I thought the foundation of the Patriots was built on. Apparently, I was wrong. Growing up, I was taught a man's word is his bond. Obviously this isn't the case with the Patriots."

At first blush it might seem crazy that Mankins is leaving millions upon millions of dollars on the table because he feels slighted, but I applaud the man for sticking to his guns. Say what you will about him, but the guy's got principles. These principles may not be the best move in a financial sense, but why should everything be about money all the time?

The big loser in all this is Kraft. If Mankins is stubborn for not apologizing publicly, then Kraft is petty for making him do so. It's his team, he can do what he wants. But if winning a Super Bowl is the ultimate goal and having Logan Mankins gives the team a better chance to do it, then Bob Kraft should swallow his pride and let this one go.

I heard about the Mankins/Kraft thing the other day, and I have to say IF this story is true, I give Logan a lot of credit.

It takes a man with a lot of integrity to leave $57 million on the table because he refused to issue a public apology.

Like I've posted here several times, I admire Kraft for saving football in here in New England. But if this story is true, there's a side to Kraft I never knew existed.

Down here in Connecticut, we've experienced this same exact side of Kraft too. ;) :(

Patriots owner: Logan Mankins apologized, but no deal was ever in place - The Huddle: Football News from the NFL - USATODAY.com

It's the money not the apology.

Wow! LMAO! IMO, if he holds out again, it's ownerships fault for setting the precedent in the first place. Now every player will think they can get away with re-doing a contract before it's up.

This has been going on for a LONG time now.....
Revis is hardly the first to do this.

I'm NOT saying it's right , just pointing out that it is nothing new for a high profile player of his stature.

What it IS doing is making Revis out to be a Prima Donna, particularlly if he does it again.

He may as well move to WR.

I heard that this morning down here also. IF the Redskins do trade him for JUST a 3rd rounder...to me, it just proves that Shanna-douche had it out for him from day one and wouldn't have cared less if he would have injured him during his little pissing contest. Hell, even Donovan McNabb stated that they cannot win a productive without him.

Haynesworth is just a baby that doesn't want to practice, he wanted to be treated like he was at the last place he was with.

Chances are if he goes ANYWHERE, it will be Tennessee.

Thing is, He already apologized to the owner and everything was good, TILL the Owner wanted a Public apology, for some reason ......

I say, good for Mankins.

I have zero problems with his comments.

Randy Moss: I want to retire a Patriot - BostonHerald.com

He will play for his next contract, nothing like a motivated player is his contract year.:up

Otoh, if he doesn't feel motivated because the Pats haven't come out and told him that they would look into the idea, .....

Ya never know what to expect out of him.
Personally, I think his conversation with Bill may have smoothed things over.

I read somewhere last week that the Owners actually want to move the season to a 22 game season, but felt the players would balk.

22 week regular season!!???

The playoffs would be the ultimate battle of attrition! I can see the Super Bowl marquee now:

As I watch Welker continue to perform brilliantly, I can't help but think that the Dolphins misused his potential.

With Miami from 2004-2006, he had only 1 recieving touchdown and never exceeded 687 yards.

Wasn't those his first several years ?
Lots of players are misused till they make thier mark.
