2 or more ext hard drives on vip 622?

When I tried to plug in another hard drive to the
front usb jack it gave me some kind of message
that there was already a hard drive hooked up.
Is there anyway to do this, short of manually
unplugging and replugging back in?

One drive at a time. Several, connected to a hub but only one powered on is known to work fine.
