Has there been any definite information as to what channels will be offered in the Family Pack tier? I hadn't seen any specific threads on this and it is hard to dig through the thousands of posts in other threads to find such information.

It's safe to say that there will be NO ESPN, right? That's the objective here: make ESPN/Disney face the realities of FREE MARKET CAPITALISM which it hasn't at all.

most if not all of the family packages announced by Comcast, TimeWarner, etc. do not contain live programming, so no ESPN in these packages, not to mention that these packages won't offer cable networks that offer anything less than a "G" or "TV Y" rating.

I would be very surprised if ESPN were included, given the price point.

I wonder if it will include the public service channels?

USDTV includes ESPN in their $19.99 package.

Is that just ESPN or the ESPN tier?

I've seen other basic channel packages from cable companies that included just the primary ESPN channel, although more than a few have moved ESPN to a higher tier.

I wouldn't be surprised if the family pack included all the PI channels, except, ironically enough, Free Speech TV, as it often shows programs rated R, AO, or TV-MA.

BTW I wonder what will replace PBS You.

the family package probably will include shopping channels because any subscriber gets them (the knockoff ones). I have just locals and get (besides preview channels)
-NASA
-Angel One
-Knockoff shopping channels
-CCTV9
-All PI's on 61.5 (or 148)

The Charlie Channel - All Charlie All the time (Charlie Chat repeats, special announcements, etc)

The Jim Defranco Network (Take your guess)

Free Speech TV is included with the access fee, thats the only one I get off 110, and I get a couple off of 148 (i get nasa too but so does everyone).

Just saw a press release over at dbstalk, D* has just announced a new "Total Choice Family" tier with 40 channels, it includes 12 PI channels, shopping channel's and mostly G rated channels and no ESPN, cost is $34.99/mo w/local's. For detail's go to dbstalk's D* forum. It will be interesting how this will compare with E* "Dish Family" once the channel line up is announced, which will be $10/mo cheaper at $24.99/mo w/locals or should be $12/mo cheaper wo/locals $19.99/mo vs $31.99/mo.

It will all depend on what the content will be to see which is really the better deal. If Dish Network does not have as good of content as DirecTv in that package then we will have to decide if AT60 is comparable to DirecTv's family package.

Notice that the price of DirecTv's family package has locals included but is the same price as AT60. Without having ESPN and perhaps certain other expensive channels this may have some really good content compared to AT60. Dish Network may want to take a look at the package once it comes out and see if they should have a similar package to DirecTv's or drop AT60 and replace it with the Family Package.

I think Dish Network has a prime opportunity just like DirecTv does to have a more customable package as their basic to get rid of some of the expensive channels so that consumers can have a different selection if they dont like sports. This could be their way of forcing ESPN and some of the other stations into the higher priced packages and could give the satellite companies more leverage when discussing deals to get into that family package.

On the other hand if Dish Network keeps the $19.99 package ($24.99 with locals) this would give consumers a fourth package to choose from and Dish Network could add channels to this package in the future as this could just be a starter package.

Not in America. ESPN requires carriage on the most basic tier (and in analog on cable systems) for all providers. Not the local channel only tier but the next one.

Even USDTV had to carry ESPN if they wanted any chance of carrying any Disney properties (4 of 11 USDTV channels are Disney properties - 6 of 11 if you include Lifetime and LMC in which Disney is an investor)

It appears this is no longer true, so far ESPN is not in any of the new Family packages that cable and satellite company's have announced so far. We do not know yet if ESPN will be included in the coming soon"Dish Family" yet from E* but I doubt it, we do know that ESPN is not included in new"TC Family" just announced by D*.

I think ESPN is going to tred lightly on this one. There is no way they want to take on Congress trying to keep ESPN embedded in things like a Family Pack. Boy that would be a bad move on their part to make that kind of headline.

Again, this isn't about decency or family values at all. Cable/DBS companies are pulling ESPN out of the family pack because ESPN's cost has gotten way out of hand and they are circumventing the capitalistic system. Now that people will see that ESPN was the reason their cable/DBS bills have been skyrocketing, they will decide wheter or not the price they are asking is worth it. Free Market capitalism will take hold and all the worlds problems will be solved.

Disney is making an exception for "Family Tiers" where they will allow other Disney properties without ESPN. But only as a compromise to try and avoid more pressure toward a la carte.

Don't expect these family tiers to be a bargain - they will be priced to discourage any meaningful number of subscribers. Those that do subscribe will be much more heavily contributing to the bottom line of programmers and MSOs.
