no thanks, i want control over my recordings, not the provider. as soon as the cloud comes the internal HD will go away. charter already told me of their plans to do this.

If they didn't intend for you to use it as a storage device, why would they include a 1TB drive? That seems a little much for some simple "time shifting". Calling people foolish for using a product differently than you do seems a silly.

oh yeah, i've got a 2 TB external drive on one dvr, a 1TB internal on another, and and another hd-dvr, none have over 10% free

you have control over the install, don't let him drill where you don't want him too. i asked mine to change the routing and he was happy to oblige. i've had directv since 2001, they are a great company and i think their customer service is very good, maybe the best out of all my utilities...

I personally don't like the clients, so i would get 2 hd dvr's. either a "genie" and another hd dvr(7 total tuners) or just get 2 standard hd dvr's(4 total tuners)
