It sounds like your cat broke a wire in the cable. There is probably a common wire, a + (clockwise) wire and a - (counter clockwise) wire. The controller energizes whichever wire is needed to turn the rotator motor in the desired direction, if the + wire is broken the rotator will only rotate...

There is software out there that can record almost any stream to a PC, perhaps something similar could be coded for the Hopper. All that is done at the provider stream not on the Hopper. I can do that also with my Fire Stick on many streams but there is no buffer capability on the Fire Stick.
