New 622 Feature Coming

I not sure, if you have Dishcomm setup then I would hope it works like if you had a phone line hooked up.

Guess we will see in 3 more days. :)

We can only hope that this is the "next" version for after this week's planned update.... Something tells me though that if they just started pushing this week's planned update to a different beta group, as P Smith mentioned also, they're trying to track down something. :( And if they don't find it, we all know what that means. Yet another delay...

Then JL has to sh*t on Scott and this site.... Hate to say it, but I tend to lean the same way as the one guy over there who's .sig says something about "it's not a release until it's released". I've seen too many dates come and go.... Where's Weather on the 8's ?? :D That is one feature I would like NOW. Wasn't external drive support supposed to be out last December, according to a Tech or Charlie Chat ??

I do agree with that to a point but when it comes to new channel rollouts, etc. Scott's been pretty good about these things lately (from what I've seen in those times I've been over here). I don't see any reason to not give cautious optimism with these new features.

Looks like it's cheap, works as a bridge, and seems to be missing some amenities like good documentation. For 30 bucks, I figure it's a good deal. :)

Should we start a "Wireless Gaming Adapter Bargain Watch" thread?

I'm going to need two..... cheapest I've found is $39.99 + $10.00 shipping.
I just ordered the Buffalo Wireless Ethernet Converter from Newegg based on a previous recommendation in this thread. Based on the reviews, this looks like a pretty good solution for connecting up to 4 devices.

Newegg.com - BUFFALO WLI-TX4-G54HP IEEE 802.3/3u, IEEE 802.11b/g Ethernet Port Wireless-G MIMO Performance Ethernet Converter up to 125Mbps Data Rates WPA-PSK(AES, TKIP), 128/64-bit WEP - Retail

Geesh you guys are smart - can I be your buddy.:)

Seriously, how do you get to know all this sh*t? I can't seem to get a simple little wireless connection from my router / modem to my daughter's computer working properly and now I have a multifunction printer / fax that says it has networking capability but I haven't a clue how to set it up.

Is there like a good "Networking for Dummies" resource available?:D

when you screw things up enough, you are forced to learn how to fix them!
that's how I got my "on the job" training!

there probably is a "networking for dummies" book out there..check your library, as that is always the best resource, and its paid for by your tax dollars!

Try this if you have Windows, most programs to help with networking cost money, but this is free.

Read the directions several times and then give it a try. Call customer support for your printer and they will help you it you have trouble setting it up. That is pretty much what the rest of us do except the computer smart guys and gals.

Question for the computer smart folks. I have a spare new Links WET54G Wireless Ethernet Bridge. Will that work OK or is there something else that will work better for a VIP722? How about a wired switch? I do have an ethernet port at my TV location that the Slingbox uses. Would a switch work better or the wireless bridge? The slingbox 5e plug goes to a Links five port switch in my basement and then the switch is hard wired to my Links wireless router on the 2nd floor. If I put a switch at the TV location and plug in the 722 and Slingbox, will it work? I guess the question is can a 5 port switch go to another 5 port switch and then to the router? Thanks for the help.

A light on the port of your hub, router, or switch simply means there's electrical continuity from one end to the other. Until it starts flickering, i.e. "activity", it's nothing.

Try this: If you have a router or hub, disabling networking on your PC and go look at the light on the router/hub. It will still be lit up.

Actually I've seen the connection do some blinking (second light), but i can confirm from my router's DHCP that it hasn't asked for an Ip address. I think it is just doing basic ack/naks to some broadcast being sent on my network.

I believe it will take a new software version to truly become active.

I am in a similar situation to what you have. One phone connection (for caller ID), and one LAN connection. I've connected my one and only LAN connection to my 622, but I've got plans on upgrading to Samsung's BD-UP5000 combo BluRay/HD DVD player which also has a LAN connection (for accessing firmware updates and on-line bonus content). There will be an eventual A/V receiver upgrade in the future as well and I am seeing that many receivers have LAN ports giving them the ability to stream music from networked PCs, or on-line "internet" streams.

I've got an old Netgear 5-port 10/100 switch, which I've connected to the RJ45 on the wall behind my entertainment center. It take care of any and all future LAN enabled devices.

If there comes a day where I outgrow that, I'll go with a 10/100/1000 with a few more ports.

I could easily go wireless, however I've found that time spent on configuring them don't outweigh the added expense. Right now the only WiFi I'm running is dedicated for my notebook and PDA.

Hope this helps.

Spence

P.S. I know I get wordy so the answer is "Yes" a switch would work. ;)
