What satellites are good to pick up with this?

I just found this big metal dish that says panasat/panarex on it and I'm wondering if I can find galaxy 97°w, 117° or any other FTA satellite. The lnb you will se once you scroll down looks exactly like the one that was on the dish when i found it. Its NOT a c band lnb

I'm pretty sure most of you know that isn't a c band lnb but id thought I'd say that anyway

Get out a tape measure and tell us the size of the dish. As far as the LNB the pictures are not clear enough to read the label. I suspect it is for dish network, not FTA, but that's a guess. Let us know the model # and what does it say for L.O. Freq.

I'll let you know once I find the tape measure somewhere in my garage

Ok I just checked the lnb and it urns out it has no case on it or any markings. To me it looks like an old directv lnb someone put on there

Judging by the pictures that is an old Directv LNB so that will need to be replaced with a new LNB that will work for FTA. It also looks like the LNB holder on your dish is 30mm diameter. FTA LNBs require a 40mm holder, so i think you will need to replace the LNB bracket too. You can try something like this:

Judging by the pictures that is an old Directv LNB so that will need to be replaced with a new LNB that will work for FTA. It also looks like the LNB holder on your dish is 30mm diameter. You could most definitely pick up BVN @ 116.8. that is a DVBS2 1/2 FEC. That has got to be the easiest signal to pick up on KU band. 97w still has some DVBS signals, so yea, that would probably work too... But, i remember scanning 97ku and pulling in well over 400 satellite services and most of them were DVBS - Wow, how that has changed.

Provided that you have universal LNBF 10.7 to 12.750 GHz range you might get at least + or - 10 FTA or FTE stations, some Mexican, BVN Dutch and BYU.

You must be in Southern part of USA for 116.8W* bird to get this kind of signal.

Well, i might be missing some channels, but i can get 116.8 and I'm hugging Canada and Lake Superior, and i get the following FTA channels with a universal LNBF : BVN, BYU, a second BYU channel, GEB America, Hope America (english & spanish) JTV (jewerly shopping), Radio Nuevo Tiempo (radio) , Tigo Star (Promo Channel) and from time to time some FTA mexican channels.

You're generally not going to find channels like that FTA. Don't get me wrong, there's good stuff out there, but if OTA TV is an option in your area, I would definitely pursue that first. I get 56 channels free over-the-air (some repeat), I've got separate VHF and UHF TV antennas combined, works great. I get some really good channels like Story TV, MeTV Toons, Rewind TV ,etc. I've got 2 KU dishes right now, with 4 LNBs total on 97/101 and 99/105. I consider Ku band FTA a nice supplement to OTA tv, not a replacement. The easiest sats to start with are 97W and 101W. 101W is by far the strongest of the ones I've tried, it's even easy to get on a smaller DirectTV dish. 97W has the most channels in one spot, but I only consider ~5 channels on there worth even flipping to.

If you like news, Ku FTA is great, if not, eh, it's okay (it's awesome for radio!). I'm working on getting C band going right now, from reading Lyngsat listings it'll have ALOT more entertainment options, but still nothing like pay-TV premium channels (sometimes something goes ITC, but that's not a given). And a lot of the channels on C-band I already get OTA. My main reason to go C band is for HD picture or more reliable reception. YMMV

DirectTV may have sats at those orbital slots, but I'm referring to SES 1 at 101W and Galaxy 16 at 99W.
