Does an offset dish lose any of its efficiency by being rotated on a motor to its extremes? With the lnb fixed in position and the dish itself skewed so far, would it be any better to have a fixed dish pointing straight at the satelite and the lnb itself skewed?

Its sure hard to estimate azimuth on a dish that is lying 45 degrees on its side.

NO way! Its MUCH better when the WHOLE dish skews, then its lining itself up EXACTLY with the satellite in space!

Good question!

Pete is right on, and if you set the dish up correctly, from the begining, you will not have any problems with it... Providing of course, that you have a solid mount, and the mast is perfectly plumb...

I've wondered this myself, especially with most of us having a fixed dish at G10 which is far west. I have my dish on a perfectly vertical mast with the LNB rotated, but what if I wanted to rotate the whole dish? My Winegard dish doesn't have a dish skew rotater on the back. Would it be a good idea to tilt the mast in order to have the dish perfectly aligned with the Sat??

Yes! That's exactly what I do with my "Poor mans H to H mount"

Off set your mast to the same angle as your latitude then rotate the dish until you land on the satellite!

Cool........
Hey Pete is the mast your using bigger than most, or is it an illusion because it's at a 45 degree angle.

Also..... since mast is at correct angle (lattitude) then dish elevation equals Zero........ is this correct ?

This is the standard mast for the 40" P* dish!

The elevation on the dish ends up at around 24º here!

you would set up the dish elevation like it was motorized (thats where we get the 23-24 degrees from)

Where I'm at my latitude is about 40 and the elevation for G10 is 36 degrees. So can I just tilt the mast at a 40 degree angle and readjust the arm to be looking up 36 degrees? Sorry, but I haven't had experience with a motor yet. Plan to get it next month.

Set the mast at 40º same as your latitude, then set the dish to 24º in elevation, the mast elevation should never be changed but the dish elevation can be changed to catch the signal, use your signal quality meter as your guide!

Thanks Pete. I'm a little slow so I still don't quite get the logic behind tilting the mast to my latitude and leaving it there as I would think that the mast's tilt angle would change on a motor as it scans the belt. But what I lack in comprehension I make up for in faith so I'll give it a try!

I think pete was talking about the "Motor Mast", and not the mast that the Motor sits on!!! There is a degree meter on the side of the Motors...

Right Bob! The "Poor mans H to H mount" does not use a motor! But just like a motorized system the mast is set to the same angle as your latitude, that's where any similarity with a motorized set up ends!

ok my latitude is 41.8 , so how would do you figure dish elevation ?
When I set up my motor there was a calculation but that varies on different motors, since I wont be using motor but a angled mast at 42 degrees

Tomorrow I am setting up a Fixed dish and want to skew the whole dish using the poor man's H to H mount , might try T12 just to see if it's possible, but dish is actually for Hispasat.

Bump.

Or should I just find my true south sat, leave it at that elevation and turn dish to get other birds.

If there is an answer to my last post , let me know.
