X-Box, Playstation, and Wii Game News

Poke, for future reference please cross check this forum before you post stuff to this general thread. This was posted in the Xbox One owners thread an hour before you posted it here. And there are other instances that I could cite but I'm not looking to pile on.

And stuff like this that is console specific should be in its appropriate console thread. This thread is more for games with multi-console releases so that we don't have a bunch of smaller, eventually abandoned threads about particular games (basically the thing Scott was considering adding before we shot it down) or stories that relate to multiple consoles but don't merit there own thread. So please for future reference don't post console specific news in this thread, and for everything else please check all the other unread threads so we don't have redundant information in multiple threads. Thanks.:)

My bad did not see the Xbox One thread until a second ago to have not had enough coffee yet.. :)

Titanfall has sold 10 million copies. Not bad considering it wasn't even available on the console that has been dominating in sales for this entire console generation.

Wow.. 10 million is nothing to sneeze at. Must have done well on PC and 360 as well. Lord knows it didn't get all those sales on just the One.

It looks like the review embargo for Rock Band 4 is over and they're popping up everywhere. General consensus seems to be that it's not so much a next-gen release as it is just a refinement of Rock Band 2. Also the tracklist sucks and for some reason there's no online play anymore. That last one annoys me because I did like how in 3 you could jump into games and play a bunch of songs with complete strangers. Also it was the closest I generally could come to getting a full band going. I don't see myself picking this up unless it got HEAVILY discounted and all the USB instruments were finally working. For some reason the USB drums from RB1 don't work on the One, and the Guitar Hero 2 wired guitar is "in testing." That and the fact that I have 3 kids isn't helping RB4's case either. I still am interested to see how the new Guitar Hero turns out.

Looks like IGN accidentally revealed the new Far Cry game, which looks to be Far Cry meets The Flintstones.

Hmmm... A Far Cry game without guns and explosives is an interesting choice. The open world exploration and hunting in that series has always been a big part the fun but so has mowing down an outpost full of bad guys or blowing up their jeep with a grenade launcher.

At least they are trying something different though. Far Cry 4 is a great game but it's really just a better version of Far Cry 3.

Exactly. They can't really do anything more with the gameplay and setting of an open world, exotic land with animals and explosions. All you can do at this point is either make it an urban survival game (which may be a little obtuse and too expensive to make) or you do it like this and strip out explosions and vehicles in favor of old weapons and dinosaurs.

I'm a bit behind the series. I liked 1, lost interest in 2, haven't had time to get into 3.

I had a moment of weakness after watching IGN's video review yesterday and went over to Amazon to check pricing. I did this even though I have said I'm not interested because I don't live with a dorm full of people who want to play anymore like I did last time Rock Band was big and I don't want plastic instruments taking up space in my room. I did this even though there are only a few songs on the entire set list I'm interested in playing because I can go buy DLC for songs I like better.

I gave my 360 instruments away when I was leaving college so I would have to buy a bundle that includes them. When I saw that they were charging $249 for a bundle that includes the full setup or $129 for just the game and the guitar all my interest completely disappeared. It's just too big of an investment for something I will probably only play a couple times when friends come over.

The sad thing is that I think there's a really good chance that RB is going to fail because it doesn't really satisfy any particular market for the game.

For new buyers, or people who don't have their equipment like yourself, the price of entry is just ridiculous. $249 for a "full band" (I put it in quotes because you only get 1 guitar) is a heavy investment, and unlike when these games came out for last gen, there's no other games that this equipment will work with and vice versa. At least last gen you could use Guitar Hero stuff for Rock Band and vice versa. Also, this has been universally heralded as the weakest song lineup of all the Rock Band games. I realize that music taste is subjective but when basically everyone agrees that it isn't that good, it's probably not as good. This is due in no small part to the fact that Harmonix doesn't have MTV backing them anymore, so they lost a LOT of negotiation power for music licenses. So to really get a pleasurable experience, not only do you need to pay over $100 just to get the game with an instrument (Unless you decide to just get a USB microphone and use the game as karaoke) but you also have to pay more money for DLC to get songs that you like. Not very compelling.

For people like me that still have all their equipment (including old consoles with DLC) the package is less compelling. For the old instruments, unless you are in the Playstation Family, you have to pay extra to get the adapter to use your old equipment. There still isn't full compatibility of old stuff, although that may change later. But even if we do get full equipment compatibility, what we DON'T have is full DLC compatibility. While it looks like all the stuff from the RB Music store works along with songs from the spinoffs like AC/DC, Greenday, Lego, etc work, exported stuff from Rock Band 1 and 2 do not, and 3 had no exporting option as it didn't come with any codes for exporting. Also, various DLC packs that they sold in disc format don't appear to work either. So for me, playing RB 4 means that I lose access to at least 220 songs that I can't currently use in the game. 1 & 2 may change, but unless they figure out a way to export with RB 3, then I'm out at least 83 songs.

So if I get RB 4 and just want to play that, I'll have to pay more money, and get less songs. REALLY not very compelling.

And finally, Guitar Hero Live provides a more unique experience, has arguably a better guitar in terms of frets, AND costs $30 cheaper for the game and guitar.

While I do give Harmonix kudos for trying to resurrect the franchise, I can't help but think that this is basically a doomed project. They don't provide very compelling reasons to start from scratch or come back, especially if you still have all your old stuff. Of course this could always change with better instrument compatibility, importing options, and a price drop, but I don't know how many people will still be interested by the time that comes. You need to strike when the iron is hot.

I hadn't heard that there was so much trouble with the DLC before. Other reviews made it sound like just about every DLC song was available. I checked out IGN's list earlier today and it looked like there were about 150 DLC songs that were getting left behind and over 1500 DLC songs that are supposed to be compatible. I'm not sure why they decided not to include the band names in this list. That would have made it much more useful.

I always preferred the Rock Band franchise but it looks like I'll be waiting until reviews for Guitar Hero Live start to hit and see if that may be a better option. I originally thought Rock Band 4's brute force, huge list of DLC would be much more compelling than Guitar Hero's music video gimmick.

I'm still leaning that way but depending on what music is available and how much it costs to buy it might be a better choice. Either way I won't be buying Rock Band at $249. I'm guessing retailers will drop the price pretty quickly to get those giant boxes out of their video game sections. Guitar Hero at $99 is much more reasonable but you don't get the ability to play with friends for that price.

Far Cry has gone PRIMAL...2/23/16

It looks cool and I like the release date. I just hope it's not too similar in gameplay to the PS4 exclusive, Horizon. I realize that these are actual prehistoric creatures instead of robots but the open world, spear and bow hunting mechanics seem like they could turn out to be almost the same game.

I am looking forward to both games but I hope they are different enough to make them both worth playing.

Yeah I'm surprised I had to "find out" about the DLC issue. I guess I'm one of about 20 people in the world who purchased RB 1-3 and also imported tracks along the way. A quick search of that song list yielded that yes, the songs off the main games are NOT available. And keep in mind, those were typically the best ones because they had to be to sell the game. I mean look at these songs that aren't available: RB1, RB2, RB3. Maybe my situation is more niche than others but until they resolve this, it's going to be a VERY hard sell for people like me, and it's also a question as to how many of the songs from those games they'll be able to bring in. It was quite common for songs to be lost during the import process due to licensing issues, and without MTV backing them, we may run into a similar situation as we did when Activision tried a similar thing with importing into GH 5 from 4 and Greatest Hits where licenses were just too expensive and a lot of the songs were just lost in the process.

And finally, the loss of online play is just dumb. That's been around since RB 1, and not everyone can assemble a group of people to play together. RB is undeniably more fun when you play with more than 1 person, and while it's obviously more fun to do it when everyone is there, I also really like that feeling of playing with other people even if I'm not in the same room. It feels good to get into a full band groove and help out other people who may be in danger of failing by deploying overdrive at the correct time. To be fair it might come back later because Harmonix is pushing RB 4 as a platform as opposed to just a game, meaning that there won't be a RB 5 or any of the spin-offs and all changes will stay in RB 4, but again by then it may be too little too late.

I thought the earlier post about Far Cry Primal was a gag. But now that I've seen the trailer, I would most definitely prefer a game like Horizon, unless there's a really compelling story here beyond surviving by hunting prehistoric animals and attacking competing tribes for resources. Since it's being released less than 18 months since Far Cry 4, I wonder if it's even a full AAA game... I see it being more like a $30-$40-sized game, perhaps even as small as Blood Dragon.

As Far Cry 4 showed, there's only so many different reasons to hunt certain animals or attack or defend yourself against other humans. Given the limitations of the environment and technology of FC Primal (based solely on what I've seen in the trailer of course), how do you have dozens of story missions plus scores of side missions that keep the player interested? I realize repetitiveness is a problem with most of Ubi's open-world games, but after you attack your fifth enemy campsite and take down your fifth mammoth, where do you go from there?

WWE2K16 has released the details of their Season Pass and DLC

While I'm not a huge fan of the concept of Season Pass, I do commend 2K for coming right out and saying exactly what you'll get with the Season Pass, as opposed to making you wait and just hope that you get your money's worth.
