Been with dish for 12 years - needed faster hardware!

I've been with dish for 11 years, and I just can't seem to switch to streaming yet. My tv is on ALL day and it's on the news, the science channel, natgeo, or some other science show or motortrend. Due to it being on all day and night, satellite is just easier. I currently pay $156 for the Top 200/local channels and 3 tvs.

My current receiver is from 2012 and it's a Hopper (with sling? records 3 shows at once and can access remotely). Anyway, it is so slow and takes like 5 seconds to respond after pressing a button on the remote making changing channels and watching/fast-forwarding recorded shows painful.

I called dish and said I want a lower monthly bill and the first person offered free PPV movies every week and HBO and other stuff I would never use. They said, "I will transfer you to a "billing specialist" who can help with the deals you want. So I got upgraded to the Hopper 3 and two Joey 3s with no upgrade fee just on Friday, and got $25 off the total bill for 24 months - yes, I had to sign a 24 month contract that has a $30 per month penalty if I cancel early.

Excited to finally get a faster receiver - the Hopper 3. It was a good run for the current 12 year-old receiver, but time for faster processors and circuits! Didn't care about the 16 tuners - the speed of the receiver is finally there!

You will love the H3. It is fast and minimal lag. And you might find yourself enjoying the 16 tuners. Glad Dish hooked you up and you got a new promotional offer!

That would drive me crazy. My 722 is virtually instantaneous.

Yeah, I’ve heard the 722 is fast and ppl who have it don’t want to change it. I’m not sure if my Hopper from 2012 was that slow when I first got it? I don’t remember anymore. I’m sure it slowed down over the years. And my HDD was about 77% full, so it’s not like it was filled to the max.

If you got it in 2012 then it's the original hopper and no it wasn't always that slow. When they changed the software to that of the hopper3 in 2016 they pushed it to all hoppers and especially the hopper1 took a massive hit on speed. A few years ago they made a device called a hopper snab that plugs into back of receiver that speeds it up but still not as fast as the hopper3. Your going going to enjoy your new setup much better.

$30 per month penalty is a hefty increase. Per my contract (Dec, 2022), I would have to pay $20.00 per month

Sorry, I reread my contract. It is $20 per month penalty if cancellation, $480 maximum charge for cancellation. I didn't pay much attention to it since I will most likely keep dish for 24 more months.

Especially since the Hopper 3 is everything I wanted it to be. Super fast menu changes, guide pops up immediately, and FF and RW on recorded shows no longer slow as molasses in January!

Interesting about the software being updated on my old Hopper that it could no longer handle the changes. Just like Apple updating the iOS on a very old iPhone!

Not only that but you can have all 3 TV's on and still record 13 more at the same time

Not only that but with PTAT (Prime Time Any Time) enabled prime time big 4 network programming is all recorded on one tuner and you can have a USB OTA dual tuner dongle (two tuners) so theoretically you can watch three channels and record 18 others AT THE SAME TIME! 15 Satellite+ 4 PTAT (takes one satellite tuner) + 2 OTA.

That is quite a bit of channels! I've so far, just maxed out on 4 recordings at once (All science, discovery and netgeographic) while people watching other channels on the 3 tvs.

I'm just impressed with the speed of the Hopper 3 vs my 2012 model! I'm not a big complainer, but I guess I should have picked up the phone and complained to dish on the slowness of the Hopper and I guess they would have sent that Snapper USB device to plug in.
